Artist's Comments

This is my first real attempt at a realistic portrait using a tool other than the airbrush. It was done using charcoal pencils in about 5 hours (whew) and is about 3/4 A4. I welcome any constructive criticism.

Thanks. Its still nowhere near the quality of some of the stuff you see on here, but hopefully I'll improve. I had lots of trouble with keeping it clean, kept smudging it by mistake.

This looks fantastic! Just great! I can't even say.

The only thing I could suggest, is instead of him looking like a floating head, you might add a indication of a neck, clothing....just anything to make it not look like a floating head. The only other thing is they're are a few places in the hand and head that look a little blow out. The only thing I could suggest doing is adding a little more detail to make it less blow out. Other than that....nothing, just nothing

And yes, charcoal is a very hard medium to keep clean with, especially on your work. But you did a good job, only the edges look smugy and its not distracting what-so-ever. Looks amazing.

Thanks for the advice. The idea of putting some indication of a neck in did strike me, I can't help thinking of the hologram head from Red Dwarf when I see it. By the time I got to the hand I was getting pretty tired, hence the crummyness of the watch, but I might go back and put in some more detail some day.
I'm working on a full body Nicole Kidman at the moment which has less texture so I won't be able to get away with smudging so easily.

wow thats unbelievable!! dam how on earth did you do that? the toning is amazing? all the tiny details like the wrinkles in his skin.. WOW!!!!
